Where did the name Leland Blue come from?
When I began thinking about a herd name, I knew I didn’t want just another label in a show book—I wanted something with roots and a story that would still matter decades from now.
Leland Blue Dairy Goats came from the first pieces of land my family and I bought here in Tennessee in 2021, the farm that turned a daydream into a real barn full of voices, milk pails, and muddy boots. The blue-tinted rocks scattered across our pastures, known as Leland Blue or blue slag, caught my attention immediately, and learning their history sealed the name in my heart.
Those stones are a product of the old iron furnaces—like Bear Spring Furnace, the first one we saw when we moved to the Land Between the Lakes—industries that once helped connect rural Tennessee through rail lines and rebuild the South after the Civil War. I loved the idea that something beautiful had been shaped from a byproduct, just as this herd was being shaped from trades, selective breeding, and a lot of faith. To me, our herd name is a promise to honor the ground we live on, the history that welcomed us here, and the commitment to raise dairy goats that are correct, productive, and never forgettable.
